BEST GREEK GYRO SANDWICHES RESTAURANT in NYC
Whenever I have craving for greek food, greek gyro sandwiches always pop up in my mind and give nostalgia for eating food in the street of Greece and enjoying modern greek cuisine.
But I wonder people always confuse gyro and souvlaki both are stapled modern greek cuisine considered fast food items. The confusion between them is due to their similar appearance but in reality, ‘gyro’ means turn which means cones of meat that cook on a vertically rotating skewer.
However, ‘souvlaki’ means bit which means it is cooked over fired it has origins dating back to ancient greek in Byzantine Empire.
In Modern terms, Gyro meat is cooked on a rotating skewer while Souvlaki refers to meat cooked on a stick.
Gyros are mainly greek sandwiches that contain strips of meat, get their name is ‘gyro pou sto roasted’ means roasted meat with species with a layer of fat making it crispy and spicy.
Gyros can be made of different kinds of meat my all time favorite gyro is with chicken on it but you can try it with different meat like:-
Lamb: Gyro basically comes from Turkish doner kebab and
the lamb was typically eaten in Turkish so it is automatically indulged in sandwiches.
Pork: Pork is usually for pork-eating countries by trimming
extra fat from it and roasting it with species.
Chicken: One of the best I liked was chicken gyro sandwiches it
is relatively inexpensive and new to the food it has less fat so it comes with vegetables with skinless roasted chicken.
Beef: It is the most popular type of meat used for gyros
, especially in England and South America. The British version of gyros are called doner kebabs, but they are basically greek gyro.
Mixed Meats: For an extra thrill, you can try it with blended
mixed meats roasted with species.
